The new year got off to an impressive start with the Winter Traverse 50K Ultra on 6 January 2018. This 50km ultra marathon takes runners from south to north Dartmoor, through some of the most remote parts of the moors. Martin Taylor was flying the flag for Frome and completed the gruelling challenge in 08:30:00. The following weekend, Victoria Penman (FV35) and Lynn Brand (FV55) continued to garner the off-road mud and glory with the Rough n’ Tumble 10 near Pewsey. Victoria crossed the line in 01:38:28 followed shortly after by Lynn in 01:47:07. Sunday, 21 January saw Martin Taylor back in action in the Doynton Hard Half. He completed this challenging off-road course in 02:13:25, earning himself 1st position in category.

January 28 saw a large contingent of Frome club athletes at the Longleat 10K. Starting in front of the magnificent Longleat House, this undulating race takes in the estates' private, traffic-free roads. Ross Stacey (MSEN) was first to cross the line for Frome in 00:39:30, followed by Anthony Sprules (MV60) in 00:42:06, Justin Doherty (MV45) in 00:46:28, Jamie Dawe (MV40) in 00:46:28, Peter Reed (MV45) in 00:47:29, Ben Spicer (MSEN) in 00:49:52 and Anne Huggett (FSEN) in 00:50:31. Zoe Boulton (FSEN) finished in 00:51:32, followed by Sarah Smallbone (FV50) in 00:53:09, Adrian Roddis (MV45) in 00:54:47, Chapper Boulton (MV55) in 00:55:55, Richard Tewkesbury (MV60) in 00:55:38, Nick Johnson (MV50) 00:58:27, Laura Millard (FSEN) in 00:59:52, Clare Dunning (FSEN) in 01:05:46 and Jessica Lambert (FSEN) in 01:15:33.

On the same day, over in the Slaughterford valley, more intrepid Frome club runners lined up for the Slaughterford 9. This multi-terrain 9-mile race covers steeply undulating countryside and packs an impressive 900 feet of ascent/descent. Pete Larman (MV40) was the first Frome club runner to finish in 01:11:25. He was followed by Claire Janigo in 01:20:54, Ian Holmes (MV40) in 01:24:26, Martin Taylor (MV60) in 01:25:45, Victoria Penman (FV35) in 01:26:10, Michelle Caines (FV35) in 01:34:38, Lynn Brand (FV55) in 01:37:39 and Rebecca Webb (FSEN) in 01:37:58.
