Strong winds and glorious mud

Spring may not yet have sprung so far this year, but the snow, rain and mud hasn’t deterred Frome’s club runners. Sunday, 25 February saw the return of perennial favourite The Terminator. This challenging, multi-terrain course covers a distance of approximately 12 miles and includes several steep climbs and river crossings. Ian Holmes (MV50) was the first Frome club runner to complete the course, posting a time of 01:49:13. Lynn Brand (FV55) was next in a time of 02:17:01, closely followed by Victoria Penman (FV45) in 02:17:27 and Rebecca Webb (FSEN) in 02:17:35. Becky Horsfall (FV35) crossed the line in 02:25:10.

Frome Club runner Martin Taylor ventured slightly further afield in February to take part in the Transgrancanaria Trail Ultra Marathon 64km Advanced Race. The route takes runners from the valleys of the dry west to the island’s greener and wetter north, crossing some of Gran Canaria’s most outstanding natural scenery. Martin completed this impressive feat in 11:32:20.

Following a brief hiatus caused by the Beast from the East, local runners were back on form again on Sunday 11 March. This time at the Larmer 20, a 20-mile off-road race in the grounds of the Rushmore Estate in Dorset. Giles Padfield (M45) was the first Frome club runner to cross the line with a time of 03:31:25. Marcus Gaffney (M40) followed shortly after in 03:43:38. Victoria Penman (F45) was next with a time of 03:53:21, followed by Lynn Brand (F55) whose time of 03:54:35 earned her first position in category. Lucy Gaffney (F45) finished in 04:17:33 followed by Dave Perrett (M40) in 05:11:21 and Sarah Perrett (F40) in 05:11:21.

On the same day, more hardy trail runners lined up for The Imber Ultra Marathon. Starting and finishing in Westbury, this approximately 33-mile trail run takes participants up onto Salisbury Plain and along the Imber Range Perimeter Path, through some of the most remote parts of southern England. Jerry Rayner (MV40) finished the route in an impressive 04:55:40 while Rachel Brenni (FV40), Julie Chilvers (FV40) and Vicky Trundl crossed the line together in a time 07:53:56.
