Frome Club runners battle on in the heatwave

Frome runner, Lynn Brand, kicked off a month of races in July with the Richmond Park Half Marathon on Sunday June 1, 2018. On a blisteringly hot day, Lynn (FV55) completed the course around the London deer park in 02:10:28, earning herself 1st position in category.

Saturday, July 7, saw the return of a local favourite, the AVR relay. This ‘pass-the-baton’ style event covers 17 miles in four self-navigated stages, with teams starting in Bradford on Avon Rugby Club in Winsley and finishing at Trowbridge Rugby Club in Hilperton. Two teams from Frome Running Club entered the race. The Frome Musketeers, comprising Ted Sprules, Gary Eagle, Joseph Donworth and Peter Reed, bagged third place overall with their time of 01:51:03. The Frome Warrior Queens, comprising Lucy Gaffney, Jo Fordham, Lynn Brand and Caroline Rea came twelfth with their overall time of 02:24:40.

Also on Saturday, 7 July, a number of intrepid runners took to the Liberty Trail in Somerset and Dorset to run the Ham & Lyme 50-kilometre off-road race. Starting at Ham Hill Country Park in Somerset and finishing at Lyme Regis in Dorset, the route takes runners through breath-taking panoramas and pretty villages before finishing at the seaside. Alex Chesterton was the first Frome club runner to finish in an impressive time of 06:53:31. Rachel Brenni, Steve Carroll, Julie Chilvers and Vicki Trundle crossed the line together in 08:31:34.

More runners were tempted out in the sun the following day, Sunday, 8 July, to take part in the Bath Two Tunnels 10K and half marathon races. Three runners from Frome Running Club took on the 10K challenge. Martin Ward (MV60) finished in 00:50:28, followed by Sarah Smallbone (FV50-59) in 00:52:08. Anne Porter (FV60) crossed the line in 00:59:26, earning herself 3rd position in category. Andrew Smallbone (MV50-59) completed the half marathon distance in an impressive 01:45:36.
