Frome runners put the perfect finish on a busy May

Local runners looking to bag a personal best time over a 5K distance were in luck in mid-May as the first race in the Heddington 5K series was held on Tuesday 14, May. Two Frome runners turned up to take on this fast, flat course around the quiet country lanes of Heddington. Peter Clardy (MV60) finished in 00:21:12, closely followed by Peter Reed (MV40) in 00:22:45. Frome stalwarts Andrew and Sarah Smallbone were back in action on Saturday, 18 May in the Semington Slog 10K. Andrew (MV50) completed the mixed trail route in 00:42:02, followed by Sarah (FV50) in 00:50:09, both runners secured first position in category with their speedy times. Athletes were treated to a new event in the racing calendar on Saturday, 19 May. The brand new Shrewton Bustard 10K gave runners the chance to sample the delights of running along the edge of Salisbury Plain. It was also race number three in the Wiltshire Road Race League. Frome Running Club fielded a strong contingent, with Peter Clardy (MV60) once again finishing first for the club in a time of 00:45:51, which was also enough to secure first position in category. Caroline Rea (FV40) also finished first in her age category with a time of 00:46:29. She was closely followed by Ben Spicer (MSEN) in 00:47:37, Jo Fordham (FV40) in 00:47:54, Eleanor Swinhoe (FV40) in 00:54:22 and Peter Reed (MV40) in 01:05:44. Frome is currently in 9th position in Division A in the league and joint 18th in Division B. On the same day, Pete Larman lined up for the Dilton Dash, posting a time of 00:46:33. The Westbury 5K is another series of short, sharp mid-week road races. The first of this year was held on Tuesday 21 May. Joseph Donworth (MSEN) crossed the line in an impressive 00:16:32, to finish third overall. On Saturday, 25 May, Chris Chivers took part in the Taunton Sprint Tri, completing the event in 01:43:00. On 26 May, Harry Ebdon was taking on another long-distance challenge, this time the Dorset Invader. He completed the 28-mile, off-road route in 06:51:24. On the same day, Sally Brooker was flying the flag for Frome at the Edinburgh Marathon, completing the course in a PB time of 04:50:21. Down in London, yet more Fromies were taking part in the Vitality London 10K. Joseph Donworth (MSEN) was in action again, posting a time of 00:34:44. He was followed by Paul Waterer (MSEN) in 00:56:08, Alistair Smith in 00:57:33 and Neil Grist (MV50) in 00:59:13.
