Frome Running Club Race Report late April/early May

On Sunday 24th April, a small but competitive contingent of Frome runners completed the Corsham 10km event. This race started at the football club, took a route along the edge of Corsham, then headed to the water station following country lanes. A cheeky climb on Pound Pill had to be negotiated before a downhill stretch to the finish back at the rugby club.

Ted Sprules (V70) finished second in his age category with a very commendable time of 42:44. With 800m to go, Julie Chilvers (V40) challenged Barrie Knight (V70) to a sprint finish with Barrie just pipping Julie to the post. Barrie secured a time of 50:38 (which was 4th place in his age category), whilst Julie’s time of 50:43 earned her 6th place in her age category.

There were 994 competitors that day and our Frome participants all came in the top third of all finishers; well done Ted, Barrie and Julie.

Ted Sprules was joined by Jo Fordham and Andrew Smallbone on a cold and damp May day morning for the Sutton Veny 10km race on Monday 2nd May. This picturesque route takes runners through the village and a steep climb to the ridge before a descent down to the village and a leg-sapping incline back to the start. Ted finished in 8th place overall, in a time of 43:25, Andrew finished in 45:57 and Jo ran a good race to get over the line in 51:07.

Fab Four!

After a Saturday Park Run and a celebratory club 40th anniversary and presentation evening the night before, there was no stopping the fab four of Lynn Brand, Julie Chilvers, Ellie Burford and Emma Evans who ran the Jack and Jill 10km challenge on Sunday 8th May. This strong quartet bagged second team place overall, what a feat! To cap it all, Lynn came first in age category FV60.

Dorset Half Marathon Success

After marshalling at Frome Park Run the day before, Rachel Bala headed down to Dorset on Sunday 8th May, to take on the challenge of the Ox half marathon. This race takes in the Wiltshire Chalk Downs and Cranborne Chase Woods with spectacular views across the countryside. It is noted as a tough race, with some steep climbs and sharp descents. This was Rachel’s first race back after injury; her medal is well deserved.
