January Race Running Report

FROME RUNNING CLUB RACE REPORT – JANUARY 2023

Slaughterford 9

On Sunday 22nd January, 6 brave and hardy runners from Frome Running Club ran the infamous Slaughterford 9 in extremely cold and icy temperatures (on a weekend that saw all local Park Runs cancelled due to ice!).

This is a multi-terrain race over 9 miles of steeply undulating countryside, carrying a sting in its tail! Whilst tackling 900 feet of ascent/descent in the Slaughterford valley, runners encountered tarmac, stony paths, fields, tracks (including underwater tracks) and even some green lanes.

First home for Frome was Paul Horton (MV50) who finished in 1:07:52, which earned him 5th place in his age category. He was followed by Emma Surridge (FV40) in 1:19:54, Ian Holmes (MV50) 1:20:30, Lucy Pearman (FV50) 1:30:03, Lynn Brand (FV60) 1:31:45 and Julie Chilvers (FV40) in 1:33:08.

Great efforts by all, especially given the freezing conditions.

The following week, Sunday 29th January, saw a fabulous turnout of Frome Running Club members at the Longleat 10km race.

This race starts in front of Longleat House and takes in the estate’s private and traffic free roads. The route is undulating and hilly with a significant climb tackled twice, once soon after the start and again in the last 2 miles of the route.

Frome runners brought 3 excellent firsts in age category: Ted Sprules (M 60-69) in 44:02, Jo Fordham (FV50) in a time of 48:41, and Barrie Knight (M70+) 53:31. What fantastic running! Very well done to Ted, Jo and Barrie.

Other runners finished in the following times: Ronan Ferguson (male senior) 42:04, Paul Horton (MV50) 42:46, Keith Vance (MV40-49) 46:17, Andrew Smallbone (MV50) 47:25, David Alsford (MV50) 48:02, David Lee (M40-49) 49:08, Chris Dayman-Johns (male senior) 50:24, Julie Chilvers (F40-49) 52:54, Alan Brawn (MV50) 53:03, Alexander Fisher (M40-49) 53:38, Sarah Smallbone (FV50) 54:46, Nicky Thomas (FV50)  56:33, Emma Evans (F40-49) 59:39 and Richard Riley (M60-69) 1:03:02
